This story begins with two Americans in high heels lugging a 5-piece luggage set through the cobblestone Vatican streets fighting the smoldering sun and sweat with every drop. It ends with purchasing a 45 euro Uber to travel 2 miles up a dangerously steep hill. As much fun as I had dragging designer duffels around Europe for 12 weeks – and as much fun as my roommate had watching me throwing my bags down countless escalators and stairs – there’s an easier way.

It might have taken me over 10 countries, but I have finally learned my lesson. One beautiful word, ten gorgeous letters: m i n i m a l i s m.

13 days and 6 countries later, I am heading back to Rome with a full heart, empty wallet, and a battered backpack. What did I take with me?

Years of practice makes perfect. My advice? What you don’t bring you can buy there. As an anxious person, it took me years to calm the constant stream of “what if’s”: What if I go hiking or clubbing? What if it rains or snows? What if it breaks? When you only have 1 backpack, there’s no room for “just in case”. So without further ado, here is the backpacking Europe in winter list:

Packing List:

  • 2 jackets (1 trench coat and 1 leather)
  • 1 pair of warm leggings
  • 1 pair of travel jeans
  • 2 cozy, lightweight neutral-colored sweaters
  • 2 thin layering shirts
  • 2 of your best bras: 1 regular and 1 sport
  • Warm wool socks
  • A week’s worth of underwear
  • 1 scarf
  • 1 hat
  • 1 pair of gloves
  • 1 pair of shoes (Yes, just one! It’s up to you whether these are booties or tennis.)
  • 1 ziplock bag containing travel-size toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, shampoo, conditioner, chapstick, comb, and razor.
  • Travel towel and slippers
  • Make-up (only the essentials!)
  • Sleeping mask
  • Earplugs
  • Blow-up neck pillow
  • Luggage lock (if you’re staying in hostels)
  • Adapters
  • Charger
  • Water bottle
  • Money belt
  • Passport and copies of all documents

Now you’re ready for take off!
